Sheriff: Reluctant witnesses crack 2004 cold case killing
MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (AP) — Investigators made an arrest in a 2004 fatal shooting at a South Carolina nightclub after people who were reluctant to talk to police at the time finally spoke to detectives, a sheriff said.
Fred Greene Jr., 28, was shot in a room full of people at a te Diplomat club near Ladson almost 17 years ago, Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis said at a news conference Tuesday.
Investigators kept working the case for years and finally some key witnesses had a change of heart, giving deputies enough information to charge 41-year-old Xavier D’Antoni Williams with murder, Lewis said.
“We never gave up. We kept plugging away, It was a lot of painstaking detective work,” the sheriff said.
Investigators think Williams may have targeted Greene in the club because Greene witnessed a different shooting in North Charleston, Lewis said.
“Just a senseless killing,” Lewis said.
Williams was charged with murder remained in jail.
