Nearly yearlong death investigation closed in Bismarck

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The Burleigh County Sheriff’s Department said it has closed its nearly yearlong investigation into a suspicious death.

The death of 68-year-old Florian Kiefer has been ruled accidental, sheriff’s officials said. Kiefer died at a Bismarck residence last July 29 after suffering a head injury in a fall.

Kiefer’s wife called authorities about 7:15 a.m. Based on the initial findings at the scene and unexplained circumstances, deputies opened an investigation, the Bismarck Tribune reported.

Investigators were looking into a person of interest in the death, but that person was later ruled out as a suspect after deputies conducted interviews and reviewed cellphone data, officials said.

Sheriff’s Maj. Jim Hulm says the investigation ultimately produced “no weapons, no suspects.”

Hulm said the North Dakota State Medical Examiner’s Office was specific in details about Kiefer’s injury.

“This type of injury can’t be from someone hitting you,” Hulm said. “It’s impossible.”
